When Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons set out to design her own version of a Louis Vuitton bag, she wanted to do what to do what no one had done before. “Yet I always approach all of my work in a way that is exactly the same: I look to create something new,” the designer says on LV’s website. “Although there are various ways of breaking to create something new, this time I tried to play it straight: I simply made some holes in the fabric of the bag. I generally like small bags.”
And this is the result: a $ 2,790 Sac Plat with “asymmetrical cutouts and raw-edged details,” also known as holes punched into the sides. Won’t your stuff fall out? “The practical insert pouch keeps belongings secure,” the website adds reassuringly.
Kawakubo is one of six “iconoclast” designers who created new Louis Vuitton bags as part of “Celebrating Monogram” in honor of the brand’s 160th anniversary. She’s joined by Karl Lagerfield, Christian Louboutin, Frank Gehry, artist Cindy Sherman, and product designer Marc Newson.
